Module One - Ideas

I like the ideas of having students manage the classroom systems. I usually start out doing many jobs myself and as the year progresses, hand them off gradually to the students. I think I am going to start with the students managing them from the beginning as a change for next year. I will be recreating my job system this summer. I also use the "Do/Done" folder idea already for students that need to have a little extra help with organization, calling it "Keep/Turn-In." I am going to implement this for EVERY student on day one. I am interested to hear from everyone else (and will keep reading) to know if you think this type of folder can go back and forth between school and home in 5th grade? In other words, if they don't finish something, and it is still in the "Do" side, should they take their folder home for homework? Or do you think this should just be a folder left at school for classwork to manage students while I small group? Posted by Sara W.

  1. I also like the do/done folders but personally I an not going to send them home. Also I would be interested in seeing peoples job lists and which ones they have tried. Some I can see working really well and others would depend on the grade level taught.

  2. I have had students check-in planners and homework, not grade it, in the morning. You have to have your most reliable students. My issue with some of the jobs are...shouldn't the students be learning instead of grading papers, for example? I tried the counselor my first year, and forgot about it, but will add it back in. I think it will help. I agree as far as age goes. I think I can do most of them in 5th. The jobs I have now are "Director," manages the noise, "Lead Actors/Actresses" check in HW and planners, and then most of the environmental jobs. (Movie Theatre theme.) I will revamp it this year after reading more.

  3. Sara,

I think that fifth graders could definitely be responsible for taking folders back and forth from home and school. When you think about what is required in middle school, I think it is a great start for you do implement this in fifth grade! I also like the Movie Theatre Job themes.

I know this year, third grade is going to have each student assigned a job that we can use in all three classes since we are departmentalizing. I know that I want to have a librarian (one of my pet peeves is my disorganized library), a counselor, a mailman, a computer technician, and that is as far as I've gotten. Excited to see what other ideas people have.
